Come spring, my little potted auricula will get a seat of honor somewhere, and perhaps I’ll be able to coax a private performance of fleeting spring flowers from it. I had been keeping one alive in my garden, just barely, for two years, and now I’m going to relocate it to a pot that will go on the sunporch for the winter. After visiting this estate and its perfectly ruined garden, the auricula has got its hold on me. There was a visible palimpsest of horticulture at Calke Abbey, including this potting shed, last used who knows when. The three-sided structure allowed morning sun into the interior, while the roof kept rain or dew from settling on the plants’ foliage. This theater dates from the 1830s and when I saw it hundreds of showy geraniums were arranged on it, auditorium-style. We use John Innes Potting Compost No.2 with added perlite and leaf mould. Whats an Auricula Theatre An auricula theatre is a hanging display case for prized auricula primroses. It’s a florist’s flower, a show plant that demands coddling. Then decide how big a theatre you need and what you want to make it out of. Auriculas are a variant of the primrose, but a plant so hyper-cultivated that it must rank with the silkworm and the English Bulldog as the species that humans have manipulated to the degree that they can’t survive without our continued intervention. Standing in the north-west corner is the country’s only surviving Auricula Theatre, built in 1830 pretty impressive hey The wooden alcove not only gives the plants protection from the elements, but allows a whole collection to be admired en masse and at eye level, where they create maximum impact. The auricula thing started a few years ago, after a flirtation with primroses turned into something more long-term but not really monogamous or committed.
